Alcohol is an age old beverages proven to be existing in various civilizations.
Alcohol chemically is shown by group formula Cn-H2n+1-OH and most commonly consumed type is C2H5OH which is ethyl alcohol. Alcohol of same group formula like methyl alcohol and propyl alcohol are also utilized in various industries like paints and varnishing.

Alcohol is industrially produced in large containers by the action of yeast on substrates known as molasses generally prepared from extracts of sugarcane, potato ,maize, wheat barley other fruits like grapes apples nuts like cashews and more.
The molasses is actioned upon by yeast and the enzyme called zymase in them has the real role in the production of alcohol from substrates. But what a sarcasm nature plays, beyond the concentration of 13% of alcohol, yeast poison themselves.
But then we have alcoholic products up to 100% alcohol concentration known as Rectified Spirit.

So, How this further concentration is achieved?                             

It is processed by manufacturing procedure called distillation and based on that alcoholic products are classified in 2 types broadly that is distilled and non-distilled alcohol.
Let’s now discuss the various classification of alcohols.


They are less concentrated alcoholic beverages

More concentrated alcoholic beverages, manufactured by distillation process
Rectified spirit
They are the type of distilled alcohol but the concentration of alcohol is 100% and its mainly used in manufacturing and as solvents.
Examples of Non-distilled alcohol


Beer- made from barley, wheat, rice, millet, ginger, potatoes etc. Its. Alcohol concentration is 3-6%.
Wine- made from grapes, plum, pineapple etc. and is 10-20% concentrated.
Cider- made from apple, pear etc..
Examples of Distilled alcohol


Rum– made from molasses of sugar cane, and is 40% concentrated.
Whiskey– made from grapes mainly
Vodka– made from potatoes  40% concentration
Gin– juniper berries, 40% concentrated mainly consumed by females
Brandy– made by distillation of wine 60-70%
Tharra– made from any fruit with high sugar content, a native of India but has serious harmful health concerns due to the presence of impurities like methyl alcohol which leads to blindness and death overnight.

Newest exploitation of alcohol in industries these days is the use of alcohol as fuel by blending alcohol with petroleum products. The quality and calorific value is increased and consumption of petroleum is subsequently decreased with additional benefits of reduction in pollutants like of lead, sulphur, and smoke, as alcohols burn to give CO2 and H2O.

There are also different beliefs and customs followed by different religion about alcohol. Alcohol is portrayed as HOLY in Christiania and even shown served in Holy grail, which is believed to be sacred and magical in Christianity.

In Hindu mythology, it is often associated with lord Shiva.

In older times the manufacturing of alcohol was done in lead containers which lead to mental retardation and anaemia and other types of diseases. Since alcohol at that time was mainly consumed by rich so the problem associated with this was regarded as “disease of the rich people”.


Alcoholism increases the lactic acidosis due to which blood pH level depresses leading to deposition of more and more sodium urate crystals in joints and leading to Gouty arthritis.

Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome

Alcoholism also interferes with the action of Vitamin B1 (thiamine) and decrease B1 metabolism leads to psychotic conditions referred to as Wernicke-Korasakoffs disease.

Hepatic cirrhosis

The liver has the key function to detoxify all the products whether good or bad that is consumed by us, but not every detoxification reaction holds good for the liver as well as the body. During the transformation of alcohol, a more dangerous product is synthesised that is ethanol which further transforms to acetic acid which in a long run causes the death of hepatic tissues also known as cirrhosis of the liver.

Portal hypertension and Haematemesis


Due to cirrhosis of the liver, the blood previously entering the liver as a part of the portal circulation, no longer reaches hepatic sinusoids due to the massive cirrhotic occurrence and thus build a tension over there known as portal hypertension. This tension leads to vomiting of blood via mouth called as Haematemesis.
Alcohol is mainly boycotted in society due to its addictive nature and alcohol abuse has literally led to the end of many lives and ruined many happy families.
Even alcohol is such a taboo that few Indian states have even restricted any official purchase and buy of alcoholic products and anyone indulged is severed with punishable crime, example, Gujarat and Bihar
Irrespective of this, still the maximum GDP of our country comes from Alcohol.
Medicinal purposes Alcohol in several researches is proved to be healthy if its intake is limited to 20 ounces a day.
Red wine is very rich in antioxidants and consumed by male and female to remain young for longer.

This test is commonly employed by cops in many countries including India to confirm if the driver is drunk or not.
It’s a very simple test in which driver is made to exhale air in a tube in which a chemical solution called potassium chromate already kept prepared , in the case of alcohol breath the chemical in the tube changes colour to yellowish orange and confirm the drunken driver test.

Always consume alcohol while drinking alcohol or drink lots of water after drinking because alcohol is a dehydrating agent and used to prepare in various chemical reactions as a dehydrating agent and also used in slide preparation when it gets into our system it can dehydrate a person sometimes even to death.


A diet while drinking also helps in reducing the Ill effects of alcoholism.

Drug to leave alcoholism

Disulfiram: It is a drug used by rehabilitation centres to make the chronic alcoholics leave alcohol. This drug inhibits an enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase which causes accumulation of acetaldehyde or ethanal in the body. This causes a feeling of nausea and irritation in the alcoholics after drinking alcohol the drug also stimulates vomiting thus preventing them from consuming alcohol.
Drug-like Aspirin or Disprin should be avoided cautiously because with alcohol Aspirin can harm the Gastric Mucosa.

Alcoholism in males

 In chronic uses, it causes impotency and lethargy in males.

Alcoholism in non-pregnant female

 It causes ectopic pregnancy and irregular menstrual cycles.

Alcoholism effect in Pregnant female

 Alcohol has many ill effects on pregnant women like it causes teratogenesis in the foetus that is the malformation of the foetus and hence it should be avoided by them.
