Hostel Life

Hey, guys !

It’s me Priyanka again with a wonderful article again on SAIKISITE. This Diwali I was immensely happy when I got to know that we had a week’s time to spend at home! HOME ! Who doesn’t want to go home as soon as there are some holidays coming right around the corner? Many people do many exciting things like eating home cooked food, going out on the weekend with family, meeting old friends, eating out and not paying for the food, eating more home cooked food (honestly, after eating the mess food in your hostel life, anything home cooked sounds exciting!).

Things I learnt from Hostel Life

So now in this article, I am going to list out a few things every hosteler does after going home, leaving their hostel life for some time.

Yes!! If you are a hosteler living the hostel life (just kidding but who doesn’t want to sleep right!). We all have that one moment of happiness when you get up in the morning and realise that you don’t have to wash your clothes today because you are at home and have access to the washing machine today. Yeah, I know the feeling. And decide to catch up on your sleep after so many days plus nobody is there to wake you up as your parents understand your pain.

Obviously, When I went to my home, I was so thrilled to smell the fragrance of a simple dish I used to take for granted back when I was a kid and now is the moment when I realise the beauty of the heaven I was in back then. Now even the simplest of the dishes make my mouth water. Hence, I can conclude that food is one of the most attractive things about going home.

Everyone has that one moment where he/she is laughing with their friends and suddenly you remember that one moment where you shared the exact experience of not being able to stop laughing after someone cracks a joke about something with your sister or brother or your mum or dad . That is a moment of realisation where you become aware that you no longer are staying with your family and ultimately stop laughing. tee hee. You realise living the hostel life that nothing is more important than your relation with your family.

Family Reaction

When you have to get up and do every work of yours all by yourself and when you ask your roommates to do a certain work for you and they are all like,’ uh! I can’t, I am sorry’ , you realise that all your life your parents had been giving you comfort, doing your work, taking your responsibility, sharing the burden always. This is one of the reasons I chose to live a hostel life even when I live at an hour’s distance from my college.

Being Independent

It is always a mantra on your parent tongue ‘look how much she has changed, she has all grown up now.’ This is always there on their minds whether you realise it or not. Be it the change in the way you talk, eat, walk, take on responsibility, laugh, help your parents or siblings out, anything. They would surely notice the difference (if any) and be happy for you as it is in my case. The second reason being that I wanted to be able to live independently as a responsible citizen of our country. Moulding myself into an asset from a liability. This said there are three more years for me to go and graduate from my college and also in my hostel life, hence I still have a lot more to learn, inculcate habits, qualities in me .

I make my own way

Every student has their own story, own set of things which they enjoy, own set of qualities which they want or already have and aspire to enhance, own view over things, some want to stay as they are, some always try to change. Who am I to decide? Just another student.

  1. Priyanka Murthy has expressed well and in a precise way the hostel life and life in home. I recollect my hostel life way back in 1955 at the Hostels of Govt. College of Engineering, Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. In hostel life we grow independent without any minor restrictions/ advices from elders for every small action / decision. In Hostel life we feel that we are responsible to our life and none else.
    Hostel life fulfils more of a quarter of learning. (Read the sloka given below.
    You might have learnt this sloka:
    आचार्यात् पादमादत्ते (ācāryāt pādam ādatte ) Learning a quarter from Guru;
    पादं शिष्यः स्वमेधया ।(ācāryāt pādam ādatte ) Learning a quarter from self intelligence, dedication and exercise;
    पादं सब्रह्मचारिभ्यः (pādaṃ sabrahmacāribhyaḥ) Learning a quarter from fellow students;
    पादं कालक्रमेण च ॥(pādaṃ kālakrameṇa ca ||) Learning a quarter with the with the passage of time (Experience).
    During my hostel life I learned more of that quarter knowledge.
    All the best to you and your hostel mates and friends.
